International Kite Festival

Since 1989 International kite festival is held in the city of Ahmedabad  in Gujarat. 
The sky gets covered with colorful kites which come from all over the World. The kite festival is celebrated in the 14th of January (This day is popularly known as Makar Sankranti in India).


Makar Sankranti is a day when sun starts to move northwards giving a decline to winter. The days become longer and breeze cooler. A feeling of anticipation and joy grips all who celebrate the occasion of thanksgiving and merrymaking.

According to Hindu Mythology when the sun moves northwards it emits harmful rays.Elders insist to keep away all things,people visit temples and offer alms to the poor.It is believed that the day marks the awakening of gods who were slumbered from last six months and the gateway to heaven is open. It is a signal of merrymaking. 

Every year extraordinary fanfare associated with the papers of artwork attract people from Japan,Australia, Malayasia,USA,Brazil,Canada and European Countries.

There are kites in all shapes and design.The excitement continues even after the dark.The night sees the arrival of illuminated box kites to be launched into the sky which dd splendor to the night.

Apart from kite flying the visitors can also enjoy shopping from craft bazars and look forward to splurge on food.
